The large hammam of Rethymno is for sale! This is a unique property in the heart of the old town of Rethymno! The hammam, which had a public character, was built in the second half of the 17th century after the conquest of the city (1646) by the Turks, while it seems that it was repaired in 1894 as stated in a relevant Ottoman inscription. The hammam of Rethymno maintains its original architectural character and design. It is built on a plot of 289 sq m. while the building, with an area of 163 sq m, is in very good static condition, with strong walls and 5 domes (domes). The domes, 2 large and 3 smaller, are hemispherical with lighting holes that were originally covered by glass elements. This lighting is particularly impressive, evocative and imposing. The first large dome covered the so-called lukewarm space, where the body began to get used to the heat. The second was the main hammam, the hot one, with a temperature that reached 40 degrees. Here there are fountains and basins on the walls for washing people. In the middle of the space, a raised terrace was used for bathers to lie down and receive massages given by specialized personnel. After the hot space, there are 3 smaller hot spaces with fountains that were covered with smaller domes for private washing. Outside the hot space, the cauldron that heated the hammam with hot air, through clay pipes inside the walls and under the floors through hypocausts, is preserved. All the domes were and are accessible from the outside by a surviving stone staircase. Also, the old two-story Turkish house in a dilapidated state, with interesting architectural elements, is preserved externally, down to the wooden beams of the roof, which can be maintained, restored and used as part of the hammam complex.
