In the 3rd century B.C., king Demetrius I of Macedon decided to establish a new capital at the edge of Pagasitikos gulf, for the most effective administration of his state, thus the city was named Demetrias. Its first concern was to fortify it with strong walls. As time went by, the city was developed into an international trading port.

Between Volos and Dimitriada, the connecting link is the Municipality of Iolkos. The residents of today's Municipality of Iolkos, according to historical data, are the descendants of the last inhabitants of Demetrias. In 1423, when Thessaly was occupied by the hordes of Turkhan Wei, (general of Murad II) the Ottomans drove Greeks out of the "Castle" of Golo and were settled there because the place provided security. There, were also resided the Turkish settlers transferred from Asia. These settlers were given several of the most fertile fields of the surrounding area.
