Fragankokastello: Frangkokastello (from the Italian terms Franco, meaning 'free', and Castello, meaning 'castle') is a medieval castle located on the south coast of Crete, about 12 km east of Chora Sfakia, in the prefecture of Chania. It is one of the main attractions of the area and is famous for the phenomenon known as Drosoulites, which is observed in the plain around the castle every year in late spring. According to Venetian records, the castle was built between 1371-74 by the Venetians, then rulers of Crete, to protect the island from pirates. The phenomenon of the Drosulites: In 1828, during the Greek Revolution, the chieftain Hadjimichalis Dalianis barricaded himself in the castle with 700 men. On 18 May 1828, a fierce battle took place between the Greeks and the Ottoman troops of Mustafa Naili Pasha. The Greeks were defeated and many of them died. After the battle, Nailis Pasha temporarily destroyed the castle to prevent it being used again by the rebellious locals, but later repaired it. The castle was not used again in the following years. This deadly battle was linked to the rare phenomenon in the region known as Drosulites. Every year between May and June, in the early hours of the morning, shadows resembling figures of horsemen or warriors are seen on the plain around the castle. Tradition has it that these are the ghosts of soldiers killed in the deadly battles fought at this time of year. The most scientifically accepted explanations attribute the phenomenon to mirages or hallucinations.
