Platia is the westernmost settlement of the former municipality of Elios - Pronnoi, which covered the southeastern part of Kefalonia. They are built at the foot of Mount Ainos, the largest mountain not only in Kefalonia, but also in the Ionian Islands. A very short distance from the village is Koroni, one of the most impressive beaches of Kefalonia.

Platia was a single community with the larger village of Valeriano and the neighbouring Atsoupades. From Valeriano came one of the navigators explorers of the North American coast, who was known as Juan de Fuca, but his real name was Ioannis Fokas Vallerianos.

The village may also be heard called “Platies” for the sake of brevity by the locals. As one comes from Argostoli, just after Simotata of Livato, one meets Platia on the road. They are about 22 kilometers from the port of Poros, the largest in the area and if you start from there, you will find the Platia just after the village of Atsoupades.
