The village of Platanias is located about 11 km west of Chania. It is a purely tourist resort located on a highly organised sandy beach. The history of Platanias dates back to the late Minoan period, in fact the archaeologists have found ruins of residences and tombs that demonstrate the existence and the development of this settlement from the 13th to the 4th century BC. Platanias is also mentioned in mythology, when the goddess Athena visited Crete, she drank only water from a spring located in Ano Platanias. Initially and up until the twentieth century the village was only developed in the hills because only from there it was possible to observe any incursions by sea. During the summer Platanias is the busiest areas of Chania. To the west and east of the center lies the sandy beach of Platanias which is about 1,5 kilometers in length. All services are present in the town such as a wide choice of bars and restaurants, banks, supermarkets, medical center, hotels, pharmacies and much more. There is a regular bus service that connects Platanias to Chania.
