Taking a journey back in time, we stop back at the beginning of the 19th century. In the amphitheater square of Avgerinos on the island of Symi, we come across a traditional house, masterfully built by Symian craftsmen. Today, in 2015, the ruins of this folk stone house have been transformed into a traditional accommodation, which, respecting traditional techniques, is willing to welcome travelers who wish to experience the beauties of Symi. The house has all the necessary specifications for the accommodation of even large families with children. A central living room with fireplace, a spacious kitchen, two bathrooms and four spacious bedrooms, are to provide tranquility and cover all the daily needs that a family may have. In addition to the above, it is worth mentioning the balcony and the courtyard, from where the sea view, the beauty and the quiet of the square, contribute to your tranquility and the enjoyment of your holidays. We welcome you, therefore, to tell the story that "Platanos" is going to tell, in the new decade of the 21st century. This particular property is a clear demonstration of the craftsmanship, skill and elegance of the Symian craftsmen, who continue to work and produce such sculptures. For the restoration of the house, where the existing stones of the ruins were used, while the old masonry was preserved where possible. Traditional materials such as stone, wood, tiles and irregular slates of Symi dominate. However, for mainly static reasons, for fire protection, thermal insulation and hygiene, modern materials were used, such as unreinforced and reinforced concrete, insulating materials, ceramic tiles, etc. These modern materials were used so as not to weaken the feeling that this building had already existed since the century before last. The layout of the building follows, to a very large extent, the old organization of the spaces. However, it modifies, in the least burdensome way, the sizes and uses of the spaces, in order to meet, as much as possible, the requirements of the 21st century. The underground tank was cleaned of waste and repaired, so that the storage of rainwater could continue. Although this water is not sufficient for the current needs of a house, it supplements the city network with water, which now reaches, on a daily basis, the houses of the village. The basement, which was once a storage space under the plaster of the ground floor, after the deepening, gained enough height to form the ground floor bathroom. On the ground floor, the traditional tsimia was preserved, that is, the fireplace with the niches and cabinets on either side, which indicate its use as a kitchen. This room, due to its size, is a place where the family could spend most of its time. It can also be used as a sleeping area for large families, as the wooden sofas generously offer another storage space. This is the atmosphere that we sought to revive and for this reason the fireplace was preserved. Besides, the wooden sofa was repaired, as it reflects the craftsmanship of the carpenters of another era - and which, fortunately, is still maintained by local craftsmen. Thus, this sofa occupies an important place, not only as a resting place, but also as a storage place for the necessary linens. On the north wall, next to the fireplace where there is a window, in the thickness of the stone wall, there was an organized table with everything necessary for preparing drinks, or even for a simple meal. The destination space is no longer the kitchen, but the “Tsimia” fireplace. This happens through the fireplace, it is not just a means of cooking, but it is also this dynamic element that warms the room, metaphorically and practically, extending, on the one hand, the holidays until Christmas, and on the other hand, providing warmth in Spring and Easter, when the weather simply “remembers” Winter.
