THE SPACE The apartment has its own separate entrance from the street and a beautiful, big hallway around which are a series of rooms that could be used flexibly for living or working. There is built-in storage, a bathroom with a bathtub, and a small patio at the back. THE MATERIALS The original marble finishes, terrazzo floors, art-deco metal doors and timber-framed windows with louvred shutters have been carefully restored. The apartment has been built with textural materials using traditional craftsmanship and respected local tradespeople. THE BUILDING Sikinou Patio Apartment is on the ground floor of an interwar- style building in Kypseli, recently refurbished in collaboration with London-based architects Royffe Flynn. The ground floor was built in 1922 for a couple as their first home, with the first floor added in 1940 and the second floor in 1960 for their family. It is one of four apartments in the building, with shared access to a rooftop terrace and laundry. THE NEIGHBOURHOOD The apartment is in lively Athenian neighbourhood of Kypseli, around the corner from Kypseli’s busy and lovely tree-lined pedestrian square, Fokionos Negri, occupied by small cafés, restaurants, bars and shops. It is a 10-minute walk from Agiou Georgiou Square, well-known for its tavernas and local bars, and one of Athens’s largest public parks, Pedion tou Areos. The weekly farmers market happens on Sikinou every Tuesday, where you can find locally grown fruit and vegetables and homemade sweets.
