Komiaki is at the northern part of Naxos and can be reached either by the village of Apollonas or by the village of Koronos. Its name is derived from the ancient settlement of Komi and more recent mention of Komiaki is found in medieval documents dated c.1537. The village is located approximately 34 km from the capital Chora (Naxos Town), surrounded with both natural and cultivated greenery. Koronida (Komiaki) is built in amphitheatric fashion on the ridge of Mt. Koronos and is surrounded by orchards and grapevines which account for its greenery. The village overlooks the Sea of Icarus (named from the myth of Icarus and Daedalus and their wax wings), although the village itself is not visible from the coastal areas of Naxos. It offers timeless appeal and the feel of authentic Naxos with its picturesque landscape, and its rustic and charming vibrant village culture. This village is blissfully unspoiled. When talking about flowers, Komiaki village in Naxos certainly comes to mind. I would definitely call it the “Garden Muse” of Naxos. The mountain village has retained it’s home style, postcard vibe, with its Cycladic style houses, several well dispersed local cafes (kafeneio), surrounding soaring mountains and magnificent abundance of flowers and green landscape. Locals embrace their cultural heritage through folk dance and song, and commonly enjoy country life by playing simple games together like cards or tavli, and or gathering-talking outside their houses. There are a few cafes busy with locals, men and women, that tempt the passerby to sit for a while, drink in hand, talk with them and admire how they enjoy life in this laid back mountainous village. A scenic narrow mountain road, an exhilarating zip line ride leading to the village, offers a splendid view of the amazingly grapevine fields and old bridges with numerous age-long plane and oak trees will connect you with nature.
